Fiddler on the Roof – Musical at Brentwood College School

There are musicfiddlerals that speak to all times and generations about human values, the individual, family and society. This affectionately humorous portrait of life in a Jewish village in Tsarist Russia centers on Teyve, a milkman-philosopher who finds his values challenged by his daughters’ insistence on following their hearts rather than the dictates of tradition. Meanwhile, more sinister changes are on the horizon-ones that challenge the community’s very existence.

Definitely a concerNCOt not to be missed!  How fortunate the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra is to have, as soloists, two distinguished horn players to bring the music of Telemann and Leopold Mozart to life.  Andrew Clark (Principal Horn)and Heather Walker are both with the Vancouver Island Symphony; Andrew having recently re-located to our West Coast from England where he had played with world-class ensembles such as The Academy of Ancient Music and the Amsterdam Baroque orchestra.   The NCO, directed by Karl Rainer, will perform a truly wonderful program, “Horns of Plenty” that covers a large palette of repertoire for strings.  Georg Philipp Telemann’s Concerto in E-Flat Major and Leopold Mozart’s Concerto for Two Horns in E-Flat will feature our two soloists.  The musical colours extend through Robert Volkmann’s Baroque Serenade No. 1, the very Russian Theme and Variations by Aleksandr Glasunov, and two contrasting English works; An English Suite by Hubert Parry and Charterhouse Suite by Vaughan Williams.

TOSCA with Vancouver Opera – Oct./Nov. 2013

TOSCA – GIACOMO PUCCINI

A glorious, gritty drama of love, corruption and evil
In Italian with English SURTITLES™

October 26, 31, November 1, 2, 3 (matinée), 2013
Evening performances 7:30pm.
Matinée performances 2:00pm.

OPENS OCTOBER 26, 2013!

► In Rome in 1800, the cruel chief of police, Baron Scarpia, is consumed with desire for Floria Tosca, the city’s most celebrated singer. Using terror, extortion, and fraud, Scarpia threatens Tosca and imprisons her revolutionary lover, Mario Cavaradossi. Before Scarpia can have his way with Tosca, she plunges a knife into his heart. In the opera’s harrowing climax, the lovers are reunited, only to be betrayed, from the grave, by the evil Scarpia.

Set in a time of political and religious upheaval, Puccini’s masterful drama paints three unforgettable portraits: the fiery, pure-hearted Tosca; the passionate political idealist Mario; and the deeply depraved Scarpia. Puccini’s score is filled with soaring melody, authentic Roman atmosphere, and spellbinding tension

► All performances are at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre
► Approximate running time: 2 hours 32 minutes (including 2 intermissions)
